We had a duck nest in our front garden once and I had Mr. C on cat alert for days

He had the last laugh though as it was me who had to 'escort' mama and her ducklings all the way through various streets - and front gardens - to the nearest stream.

We christened her Hebe because that's what she hid behind

How long before the chicks hatch...?

Hope the maruading  magpies don't spot them !

Have you worked out if they are collared doves or wood pigeons yet?

Saying that, wood pigeons have blue eggs apparantly - those look white...

Maybe is a collared dove then,their eggs look like this.

Nope just checked images etc,woodpigeon eggs are also white.

If  you can see the bird on the nest,you'll know for sure.Collared doves are about half the size of woodpigeons.

I bought it from a friend's garden centre ... I could take it back, but I'm too embarrassed

How lovely! We have a pair of collared doves that come to our feeders every day and have been doing so for the past year or so.

Don't know where they nest, but it's lovely to see them.

Great pics hope we get to see pics of them when they've hatched and of the parents. In one house we lived in we had many collared doves that visited every day for food, just as many other varieties of birds did - we spent a small fortune feeding all the wildlife we had there lol, many birds, foxes, hedgehogs, squirrels, we also had 3 cats at the time, they all cohabited peacefully, no dead bodies in the garden anywhere lol. Like all the wildlife when they had young the parents always watched over them and taught them to feed independently while they looked on. Wildlife is fascinating to observe

Hmm,....it's a bit confusing, that pic might actually be an African Collared Dove

Collared Doves typically breed close to human habitation wherever food resources are abundant and there are trees for nesting; almost all nests are within a kilometre of inhabited buildings. The female lays two white eggs in a stick nest, which she incubates during the night and which the male incubates during the day. Incubation lasts between fourteen and eighteen days, with the young fledgling hatching after fifteen to nineteen days. Breeding occurs throughout the year when abundant food is available, though only rarely in winter in areas with cold winters such as northeastern Europe. Three to four broods per year is common, although up to six broods in a year has been recorded.

They are not very pretty chicks are they...aww.

Oh I dislike Magpies,absolute pirates! They chase pigeons etc for devilment and pull their tail feathers out.They also raid nests of eggs and chicks.They will also snatch adult songbirds.I've seen them grab sparrows and blue tits and they don't make a clean kill either and the poor things screech in terror..

Katty I witnessed a magpie killing a baby starling in my garden last year - it was horrible

But that's nature.
