I didn't think the jury would be back so soon and I have to question how much they deliberated over the evidence from both sides

i think that is very very wrong.

I don't think there was a separate count for just Child abuse, without murder/manslaughter. .did they know about the chloroform stuff.. if not then it's understandable how they didn't go to manslaughter to follow on from the chloroforming
