You can spell it both ways - Gare Loch.
Sorry Velvet, but you can't. Gairloch and the Gare Loch are two different places! 
One's near enuff Sutherland eh? 
Wester Ross actually, but certainly that's closer to Sutherland than The Gare Loch, which is in Argyll & Bute. The American Naval Base was in the Holy Loch - next door!
