Being banned for life on a forum is too harsh? I wanted to do a poll on this but did not know how ...my poll would have been..

Two strikes and your out.

Mods should turn a blind eye if things get heated.

Ban for life should mean life.

Two strikes and you are out but the maximum ban is six months.

...........................................................................................................
My view is the latter as we can all learn by our mistakes.

It would be nice if there could be amnesty and all those who have been banned and could be  given a second chance there has been some nice FMS banned for life because of heated arguements in  threads... I would be interested to know what others think ..Thank you

I am with you on this one Marge.  I was harshly & unjustly banned for resurrecting an old thread which meant nothing to me but obviously infuriated somebody who had posted in it who had resurrected themselves and did not want reminding of their past.  So I got reported for being a wind-up merchant which was not true. Those people who report you get to hide behind the cloak of anonymity.  That is not justice.  If people have something to say they should stand up and say it not hide behind the skirts of the mods.

I disagree with you on this one Marg. I know people I get on well with who have been banned for life on here and I think it's a sadder place without them but equally someone who is unpleasant to/about me has also been banned for life and I'm glad about that.
Unfortunately there are people who simply cannot let things lie and, if they were allowed to come back, would not have the self discipline to behave in a civilised fashion.
Btw I am not talking about fms being banned for life after a heated discussion over an emotive subject which should only be a short term ban but fms who repeatedly are personal and unpleasant and abusive to other fms.

I think either two strikes/warnings and you are out, or two strikes/warnings and six months ban.... but  being banned for one slip up is unfair. However, I also think there should be gradients within that e.g. as  Yogi and Veggie say, if someone is persistently nasty, or hurtful they should be treated differently than someone who posts a rude word, or unsuitable picture.

No I wasn't intending my post to be about a particular person Marg just illustrating that banning people works both ways.
I guess the thing is that one persons funny, pithy, thought provoking poster is anothers nasty, provocative WUM poster.
It's easy to avoid someone who winds you up in their own threads - just don't go into a thread they've created if they annoy you. The problem becomes more difficult if they are in someone elses thread where you may be posting. Btw that is not aimed at any fm past or present just an observation on avoiding situations

Sorry if I offended.

I just think it's not a question of three strikes etc.  etc. - it's all about the particular incident. Some people snap and overstep the mark and could kick themselves - little slips are forgiveable and there should be no outright bans.

Sometimes it's premeditated and totally out of order - then I think a lifelong ban is justifiable.

As I say it depends on the severity and intent of the 'crime' committed IMO. Every case is different.
