I think they should be pleased that students value their education highly enough to go out and make a stand about it, including students who are still in High School. But then that doesn't suit Cameron's agenda, who wants everyone to think the country is gripped by ASBO claiming, tag wearing, machete wielding, alcoholic, drug-ridden teenagers.

It takes me right back to when I was young/old enough to have an interest. We had all the German terrorists/ political objectors (see Paris). I was quite disappointed in the remaining years that students never seemed to have a view, so this makes me feel quite good. People have decided to have a voice. Here and over there.

Students. Cameron and his cronies live on another planet from us here. He is taking on the roll of Maggie from the 70s He is making this country into a 2 tier society where the rich are the only ones who can afford a uni education. I dread to think what this govt cut-backs will do to ou country. Just hope the unions ( those that are left after Maggie) can do something to save us from years of pain.

Absolutely support the students.  I don't think the students are being clobbered as hard as some but they've certainly got a right to feel angry, especially at that liar Clegg and his fellow Orange Book liars.  The students are taking the hit for the greed of the bankers and wild property speculating.  Something they had nothing to do with.  I'm actually in favour of student loans to a certain level, but the new costs placed on students are ridiculous.

The austerity measures are without moral justification now they've let the real villains of the recession, the bankers, off the hook.  The bankers told the ConDems and the country to take a running jump, and that's what the ConDems have done.  Osborne telling us we should "stop banker bashing" was an unbelievable brass neck after all the noises they've made in the last two years.

Absolutely 100% support the students, and am sick and tired of this coalition hitting people where it really hurts, and hitting the poor, like the Tories ALWAYS do.  And the attitude from some that 'I had to pay fees and put up with having a loan, so they need to get over it, and deal with it,' makes me sick.  For one thing, it's a selfish and mean attitude 'I suffered and so can you,' and another thing, people who have already DONE a degree, probably didn't have to pay ÂĢ30,000 PLUS for it!  So IMO they have NO right to say this.  How can they say THEY suffered the same FFS?!  The new students will pay THREE TIMES MORE!

And if some people are quite happy to go through life in debt, because of their student loan, then bully for them: obviously they can't have any other commitments!  How on earth are young people supposed to get on the property ladder with a stinking great ÂĢ30K loan?!  Or start their own life/get married etc....  Young people should not have to tolerate this. There is a massive 'I'm all right Jack, pull up the ladder;' attitude from some, who aren't having to suffer, and it makes my blood boil.

The bloody government
is even taking away the EMA college grant now, but some people who aren't affected by it (the ones who have ALREADY done their degree or who don't have children,) don't give a shit because THEY are OK!  So thats OK...  Lets just have an entire lost generation of youngsters.  No work, no college grant for books and travel (so some may not be able to go,) and no jobs!  Karma is a wonderful thing though, and the people with this stinking 'I'm all right Jack' attitude who don't care, and think that hardly anyone should be going to uni anyway, because apparently 'too many people go to uni anyway' will one day find THEIR lives affected by the government cuts and actions.  Or maybe even their pension won't quite pay out enough because of THIS generation of school leavers hardly having any jobs and not being able to pay into the state.  One way or another, it will come back and bite people on the ass!

Totally with the students. The current administrationn were put through private achool by their wealthy parents, and they are ABSOLUTELY DETERMINED that the working class will never have the same rights as them again.
BORN TO RULE - That's what the likes of George Osborne thinks, even though he'd have to take his shoes off to count beyond ten.

Thanks Slim fern,   And thanks to Cologne and Demantoid.. your posts are good too.

Have to say, I have always been fairly happy to call myself 'British:' but I shan't be doing this anymore.    I am now English.  The reason is because this is no longer a 'United Kingdom.'  Wales and Scotland (and Northern Ireland as far as I know,) are not suffering the cuts like we are, they don't have to pay for prescriptions, Scotland don't have to pay for uni fees, and so on and so on...  and basically, England are getting every shitty end of every stick going.

It's pissing me off beyond belief: as only England seems to be affected!  So as I say, I am no longer calling myself BRITISH, because this is no longer a United Kingdom.  I shall now be calling myself English.  Well, as far as I know, nobody has any issue with people from Scotland and Wales calling themselves Scottish and Welsh.. so nobody should have any beef with anyone from England calling themselves English.

Hi Blizz.  I guess you're right, but it's because of what's been going on with the English being given the shitty end of every stick, that I am no longer calling myself British, but English as it seems that it's not a United kingdom anymore..

Re the English thing..........I have actually had people comment that I am 'racist' in the past, when I said I was English, yes really.....  which is absurd, because as i said, there doesn't seem to be a problem with the Scots calling themselves Scottish and so on....

By the way, I am not having a go at the Scottish or Welsh (or Irish..) honestly.  I am just miffed that England seem to be getting the worst of bloody everything.

However, devolution was meant to give more control over budgets. If the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish choose to use their budgets to support their students, then that is up to them

Exactly Blizz....Bear in mind also in N Ireland we have no darn say in the general elections on what party is elected to govern ,all we can elect are our local reps.

I have to say I find this post very offensive and at time rather ill informed.  Personally I am not on either side but I think people in general are over reacting greatly to the increases in fees and I think that is due to a lack of understanding.  yes it would be great if there were no fees but the fact is there are and people need to stop complaining about that and quite frankly get on with it.  This country is massively in debt and most of that is down to greed - this debt needs paying and every aspect of public spending is being affected - it may not be great and we may not agree with all the policies the government come up with but we need to deal with it.  I personally can't see how this new scheme will raise more money as fewer people will actually pay off all their debt but at the end of the day I don't need to know exactly how that will work - what I do know though is that this new scheme will make Uni more accessile for poorer students.  At the end of the day your assumption that ex-students are saying "i had to pay so should you" is quite frankly wrong - there me be a couple who have said it but on the whole most don't.

hi sparkles.
surprised anyone would  think referring to yourself as English is racist .. can't see any logic in that!
As Blizz, Lee and Scotty have said , our devolved legislatures have ( limited!) decision-making powers on certain budget areas . We do still pay prescription charges in Scotland, though they're cheaper than in England ( might be wrong, but I think they're free in Wales) We're getting what we voted for in the Scottish Parliament elections..unfortunately it doesn't work that way for us with the Westminster elections!
