I've discussed this one with fellow party members and there doesn't seem any wish to call for her resignation.
Nevertheless at a time when racists are fallling out of the internet to offer support to the Lawrence killers, various footballers, and other nutjobs, she could have been more careful. I suppose twitter must lead people into thinking that they are having private conversations.
Well, with respect Joe, most Labour party members that I've known over the last 30 years seem to have the view that all white people are racist and only white people are racist; so I'm not suprised that no one wants to call for her resignation.
I'm also interested that people think she should have been 'more careful'. Would the same advice be offered to that Nick bloke (his name escapes me) from the BNP? Racism is racism in my book, she should be subject to the same condemnation as a white racist would be not advised to be more careful in hiding her anti white views.
Sorry Joe but I have a deep personal interest in the way that the anti racism rules are applied unequally and it makes me fume that anyone from an ethnic background is cut slack when they make racist statements about white people
I think there is a difference between Nick Griffin's ambition to make the racism that already exists more prevalent and state policy and Dianne Abbott's casual racism. In general, the whites have the economic and political power to enact their racism, while only a few blacks have such power to enact their racism. Dianne Abbott is one such person but even so, her power is limited by protocol. She is racist and always has been and her apology is worthless.
Should she resign? Probably, but really she's a rubbish politician who is only in the job she's in as a sop by Ed.
Agree with all of the comments above ^^^. Whether people like to admit it or not, the double standards in this country that go along with 'equal opportunities' are frankly disgusting. And yes, there WOULD be an uproar if there were things that were 'white people' only.. but nobody bats an eyelid when there is a 'black awareness week' or a 'black music award,' or as squiggle says a black police officers association and so on...
All the do-gooders harp on about how we should all be more tolerant and accept that it's a multi-cultural society now. Fair enough, but surely this should also extend to non-whites? Or is it only whites that are not allowed to be racist or bigoted? Basically, in a nutshell, non-white people are often allowed to get away with things that white people are not. Fact.
You cannot possibly expect people to be highly tolerant, when things like this happen: a black politician making racist comments,(about whites,) and they get to keep their damn job! As many have said, no white politician would have kept THEIR job if they had made similar comments about blacks.
I would relax a bit, it's part and parcel of the fact that while whites can't have their own music event they do, however, have far more wealth, far less chance of being racially abused, far less chance of being stopped by police and racially abused, far more chance to get a job over an equally qualified black person.
It's a bit like when white middle class, middle aged men bitch about being the only ones society's allowed to 'discriminate' against despite the fact that white, middle aged men are far more likely to be in positions where they can discriminate against others!
