Dennis Waterman has attracted controversy after apparently suggesting that it is "not difficult for a woman to make a man hit her".
Filming an upcoming episode of Piers Morgan's Life Stories for ITV1, the New Tricks star discussed his marriage and divorce from actress Rula Lenska.

Of his 11-year marriage to Lenska, Waterman admitted that he had twice slapped and punched the 64-year-old, but told Morgan: "She certainly wasn't a beaten wife, she was hit and that's different."
According to The Mirror, he claimed: "It's not difficult for a woman to make a man hit her."
However, recalling the incident, Waterman said that he was "very, very ashamed" of his behaviour: "We were going through a horrible time and arguing a lot. The problem with strong, intelligent women is that they can argue, well.
"And if there is a time where you can't get a word in... and I... I lashed out. I couldn't end the argument. Something must have brought it on. When frustration builds up and you can't think of a way out... It happened and I'm very, very ashamed of it."

Admitting that he had "drunk too much" to recall exact details, Waterman said that he "must have punched her one time" when Lenska had ended up with a black eye.
"I'd never done it before or since," he added. "But if a woman is a bit of a power freak and determined to put you down, and if you're not bright enough to do it with words, it can happen. And it did happen in my case."
The chief executive of domestic violence charity Refuge, Sandra Horley CBE, has criticised the actor for his comments, telling the paper: "I am appalled by Dennis Waterman's comments about his violence towards Rula Lenska, which trivialise the abuse he inflicted on her.
"No-one can make their partner hit them. However angry or frustrated Dennis felt, he could have chosen to deal with those feelings another way but he chose violence. He alone is responsible for his behaviour."

Horley added: "It doesn't matter whether he hit her once, twice or a dozen times - no man is entitled to hit his wife. Domestic violence is against the law.
"At Refuge we do not define domestic violence by the number of assaults but by the effect on the victim. Once a woman has been hit, she lives with the fear it could happen again and research shows it almost always does."
Waterman, who confirmed that his partner Pam Flint recently became his fourth wife, said that he is "quite Victorian" in his attitude to women: "It's been suggested that I'm chauvinistic but I don't think I am, I'm just... I think there is a place for women at home."
Piers Morgan's Life Stories returns to ITV1 next month.

t's causing such a furore I can't see the programme (Piers Morgan) being televised. I've never liked Denis Waterman ...........his attitude is totally unsurprising to me. Ignorant, thick, despicable and chauvinist pig!

I was subjected to a lot worse when my husband had had a drink and we ended up arguing. I stayed for 12 years. Why? I loved him and believed it wouldn't happen again. He only ever once apologised, but I have a hospital record as thick as an ancient bible. When I finally filed for divorce he had 3 people (who had been my friends and experienced his violence on me) speak out for him and I was discredited because I just relied on my doctor. Thankfully, I've managed to put it behind me and most of the friends I had before him have turned up again.

Cologne, it's a horrible thing and I believe that like many situations in relationships we all like to think that we would have the strength to leave, but I honestly believe that it's a case of until you have walked in those shoes you just don't really know what you would do.

Glad you're on the right side of that bridge now.

He's trying to play victim as well .

I wonder what he honestly thought there was to gain in saying that. Did he really think people would say 'oh yeah - I see your point' ..............surely he realised that nothing good would come out of it

im not , shows the arrogance of the man, because he felt it  was perfectly fine and that  she  was 'asking' for it.

Fascinating stuff.

First we have the Sex God Ken Barlow bolleaux (Piers Morgan) Secondly Piers Morgan offering to have a boxing match with fellow knob Clarkson, and now this..... (also Piers Morgan)

All given a good send off by the Mirror. I'm so glad that Sandra Horley CBE said that knocking the wife about was a bad thing because the role model Dennis Waterman might have convinced me otherwise.

(Yet more world class cynicism, sarcasm, and irony for you and yours)

Joe don't forget the Morgan being a complete twat when it comes to twitter and Alan Sugar (not saying the Sugar isn't blameless on that part)

One of the expert chicks said that a bloke was more likely to strike an opposite gender partner blessed with a superior IQ.

A bit of a generalisation IMO but it would go part of the way in explaining why I never hit women.

Aimee

Holy hell... I know we can all rile each other up sometimes, but just because a woman supposedly provokes a man into wanting to whack her; doesn't mean that he SHOULD!  Jeeeeeeeeeeez!

FM

What a complete and utter tool.

Primarily for his behaviour towards women but also allowing Piers the **** to yet again get shedloads of publicity on the confessions of a minor sleb
