Excellent start for GB in the Davis Cup.

Andy Murray beat Donald Young comfortably: 6-1, 6-2, 6-3. Young did not play well and never threatened Murray.

Then James Ward beat Sam Querry in 5 sets: 1-6 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 6-4 6-1. Ward is a more experienced Davis Cup player than Querry and this ultimately showed.

GB only need one more win from either today's doubles match, or one of the singles tomorrow to move into the quarterfinals.

Great Britain will have to get the point they require in Sunday's singles after the USA kept their Davis Cup World Group hopes alive in the doubles.

Bob and Mike Bryan beat Colin Fleming and Dom Inglot 6-2 6-3 3-6 6-1 on the San Diego clay to leave Britain 2-1 in front going into the final day.

Wimbledon champion Andy Murray was rested from the doubles ahead of taking on Sam Querrey on Sunday.

Given that it is very much expected that the Bryan brothers will win any match that they enter, it is heartening to see that GB managed to win a set....and outright - not on a tie-breaker.

Assuming that GB win either singles match today that will be the first time since 1935 that they have beaten the States in the Davis Cup.

If they do, their opponents in the quarterfinals will be either Italy or Argentina. Italy are currently 2-1 up.

Whichever of the countries wins that quarterfinal could well be playing Switzerland in the semis. Switzerland have already ousted Serbia but then Djokovic isn't playing for Serbia and Federer and Wawrinka are playing for Switzerland this time so that's not surprising.

AndyMurray beat Sam Querrey 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (3-7) 6-1 6-3 to give Britain an unassailable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five tie in San Diego.

It is the first time Britain have beaten the USA since 1935.

They will travel to Italy in April for the quarter-final, which will almost certainly be played on clay.

The match between James Ward and Donald Young wasn't played as GB had won the 3 matches required to get through to the quarterfinal stage.

Pity that they didn't play the fifth match anyway, as it would have been good experience/practice.

In the States, the timing would have clashed with the Superbowl Final which is the biggest sporting event in the States and is the biggest television event of the year there. Although GB would have liked to have played the last match they had enough sense to realise it would not have been popular with either the US players, the specators, and television viewing figures in the States would have been near non-existent.
