I'm shocked. Didn't see that coming. One of my pals is going to be totally devastated.
it will be a Bowie music day.
Gutted Radio says it's been rumoured for a year he was ill - I hadn't heard any of that. Legend.
Massive shock as he seemed to have kept his illness quiet.
Although I have been aware of his music through the charts, I was never a big fan, interestingly over recent years I just started listening to his body of work.
Strangely we were mostly saying how well he looked in the birthday thread last week.
In a sea of music mediocrity we have lost a true innovator.
Shame. . Saw him in concert, was brilliant..
Aww,big bowie fan here, saw him at Murrayfield in Edinburgh in the 1980's,no idea he was ill,but it seems he kept it very private R.I.P.
I'm old enough to remember the excellent Hunky Dory album, but my favourite memory was on my first YHA trip to France. That dreadful dirge Sylvia's Mother was all over the place and then suddenly out of nowhere the Ziggy Stardust album appeared. Happy Days!
I have wonderful memories of seeing him in Newcastle and London...two of the best concerts I've ever been to. Newcastle was in a small theatre and we we convinced he nodded at us! The other one was in Earl's Court and a bunch of us went but none of our tickets were together. For some reason mine was in the VIP area at the front...I was standing next to Brian May and behind Whispering Bob Harries's ginger bald spot. Bowie was amazing and his music will stay with us forever.
Sad news. He seemed to have kept his illness very private.
He was a one-off. RIP David.

Wow. You're so lucky to have seen him perform live Amythist They must be amazing memories to have!
His early and unexpected death is just terribly terribly sad. An absolute legend. Rebel Rebel is my favourite song.
RIP the late great David Bowie xx

Since the announcement of his death from cancer, speculation has begun around the lyrics to one song on the album in particular - Lazarus.
'Whispering' Bob Harris considers if it could be the singer's epitaph.
Very sad news I enjoyed some of his iconic music , but loved him in Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence . RIP
I have been doing a fair bit of reading about Bowie today, one interesting piece concentrated on his latest album 'Blackstar' and how he knew this would be his swan song.
I will need to read the lyrics for each song as some say they are peppered with poignant references.
When he released Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime) back in 2014 I thought it was a cracking piece work, the jazz elements a pleasant surprise.

I didn't know that Velvet, very interesting
One of the few times when "absolute legend" isn't hyperbole. IMO, he was the greatest musical artist ever. Can't imagine we'll ever see a solo artist of the sheer talent of Bowie again. RIP

I think it's very telling how much he was admired by his peers as well as fans. I remember years ago the NME polled current (at the time) British bands and singers, asking them who their biggest influence was. The Beatles came second, with Bowie top...
Modern Love always makes me cry for reasons, I was 12 when it was released.
So I will pop my fav video of him singing it here. Along with, him & Freddie.
I found this very moving, even from ultra-cynic Frankie Boyle:
Rog...they were playing Rebel Rebel in the Coop yesterday ...

I stuck Bowie on my iPod on random with a load of Bowie albums - albeit, not those belonging the 80s except "Scary Monsters Super Creeps". Most of those songs were great songs. The sheer quality of those songs was overwhelming!

I read Frankie's column. Frankie Boyle has that rep as a misanthrope but he's not and comes over as a fundamentally decent bloke in his columns. I didn't cry when Bowie died but four days along I'm still quite sad that he's not with us, still listening to his music and thinking if there might ever be an artist of his fantastic vision and talent
