If you take the 6 letters I've put in bold, then spin them around in reverse order, you get ARGYLE., but I don't think the clue is very good as why the reference to stretch. I would have thought this was a bit better:
Knitting pattern barely grasped when part has to be unravelled.
Olly, I'm rubbish at cryptic clues for crosswords.
It all seems so simple - now El has explained it.
Yeah, what El Loro said

Welcome back Suzy, I hope you had a fabulous holiday.

It was brilliant thanks Yogi
ah right cheers El Loro..
So basically the answer has absolutely nowt to do with the question, not even cryptically, except it's in the line up of letters, well backwardly in the line up of letters.. and the two words it encompasses have nowt to do with the 'clue' either.. what a daft crossword..
Ok I know Argyle is a style of jumper pattern so is remotely attached to knitting. .ah maybe that's where the stretching it thing comes in as in am stretching the credibility of this clue a bit to fit the word I want.. and spinning refers to it being reversed .
yay I am turning into a clever clogs.. well maybe a little
The jury is still out on this particular compiler. I prefer Aracaria meself. Nevertheless we rattled through it apart from that one clue. Sometimes it takes a few days.
CHOCOLATE
The dead one might be LATELY (being dead = being the late) but I can't figure out how the LY factor in.

because ARGYLE is a stretch(or run) of letters within 'barely grasped'

Hmmmm....I'd have expressed it as 5.
can you separate them please, getting confused as to which clue is which
LITTLE (little by little is a gradual process)
I can see an answer if the R is replaced with a D as then the answer would be ACIDIC.
The US agency would be CIA. Retired would mean reverse CIA to get AIC. Detectives would be CID. Put CID in A***IC to get ACIDIC.

There`s a T there but without that could it be EFFECTS?
Try TARRIED rather than TARDIED, as that then fits the clue.
T*R*I** looks like one word. TAR DIED is two. Is the clue asking for two words or one 7 letter word?
If it`s one word, could it be TARRIED?
Oops...just saw your reply El Loro.
I've just been given an interview without coffee by a rather imperious Mrs Jer. There is no word such as Tardied apparently. It's tarried.
What would I know? (Grade 6 Eng Lan)
