What hope is there for us if America is driven to the brink of meltdown?

Writes Will Hutton in today's Observer.

Seems the Republicans, true to type, want further cuts but no tax rises nor cuts in military spending. Like our Tories, the Republicans think the rich are the ones who will lead their country out of the mess they created, so should be protected from austerity measures. The problem with Tea Party/Republican rightist dogma is that if followed, the US won't be able to pay its welfare bills and will default on loans.

Ok, the article descends into a typical liberal bashing of Murdoch/Fox News/The Tea Party/The Middle American Christian fundy right but all the same, it seems pretty dire over there.
