Dennis Tanner is to make a shock return to Coronation Street.

The son of Elsie and Arnold, Dennis - played by Philip Lowrie - appeared in the very first episode of the long-running ITV soap. He departed the Street in 1968, when he moved to Bristol with his wife.

Corrie's official website has confirmed that Lowrie will return to filming at the show in March and appear on screen again from May. Meanwhile, The Sun reports that he is reprising the role on a six-month contract.

"Dennis's return will throw the cat among the pigeons," a source told the paper. "Ken was always sparring with Dennis in the old days. They are still chalk and cheese."

They added: "Dennis was involved in dodgy dealing, theft, fights and spent time in borstal. He was the bane of mum Elsie's life."

The 75-year-old actor has worked on various television and stage productions since leaving the Manchester serial.
