Police urged drivers to take care in west Cumbria due to "numerous flood related incidents". The A596 was closed between King Street in Wigton and the Thursby roundabout. The Cockermouth to Papcastle road was said by police to be flooded. There was traffic disruption in Maryport and some roads in Seaton were said to be blocked due to cars being stuck in flood water. The A595 at Jenkins Cross was said to be impassable.
In west Cumbria, police said the road at Low Moresby was closed due to flooding at the A595 and B5306; the A595 Loop Road North in Whitehaven was blocked due to flooding at Oakbank Avenue and there was also flooding on the A595 between Whitehaven and Egremont.
Northern Rail said the train line between Carlisle and west Cumbria was closed because of flooding. Police said the line was blocked at Harrington, Workington, and services were cancelled.
Inspector Carl Patrick said: "We are experiencing a larger than normal volume of calls.
"We are working with partners from the Highways Agency, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and Cumbria County Council to deal with these incidents.
"What we are stressing to members of the public is, unless their journeys are essential, to refrain from travelling."
In Keswick the area around the campsite was also under threat due to the amount of rain falling on already saturated ground.
The storms also left dozens of homes in the Armathwaite area without electricity. They were still without power this morning but Electricity North West said the supply should be restored by early afternoon.
Throughout yesterday afternoon the Environment Agency issued flood alerts across Cumbria. These were upgraded to warnings - where flooding is expected - around Carlisle's River Eden and Keswick.
