my granddad said he was a cook...we only found out when he died he wasn't and he was in the Infantry in WW! and was awarded the George Cross ..he would never speak about it

I never realised until recently in the trenches you served weeks on and off...you were moved back to safety and allowed out and could drink, socialise, dine etc before your next cycle started, I would have made sure I was out at all times
