yes I  get it now -i just turn the temp up /down so may give it a go

Then you just turn the thermostat down before you go out 

 

I keep it at 21 ish...I drop it to 18 if I go out and sometimes I don't even bother as it won't click on anyway. 

Same here Dame ....I turn it down to 17 at night ....but like you say , it won't kick in anyway if the temp is reached

I drop it to about 14 baz just in case, because it would be stifling in her if it came on through the night...then I adjust it the warmer the months are until I just run it about 10 all summer

Pam, I have explained time and time again, I have given you links to the advice my provider gives...it's all simple. A cold house your heating must works much harder to get it to temp, a steady warm house means your boiler may click on for ten minutes for a constant temperature. So your timer is on twice a day for four hours and probably works on full for those four hours...a constant temp say 21/22 through the day, means your boiler doesn't have to work flat out and maybe click on for ten minutes...night times drop the temp down.
