I'd be asking for money back if I was her, she's been without a service (that they promise to give)

Me too ! You hear some dreadful tales though with people being without their broadband for weeks and weeks

but it's in the contract you sign, any land line new router does take days to settle down and that's why they warn you and you've agreed to the terms. 

I don't recall anything like that in the Virgin contract.
