My mother could hear things at the back of the room and traffic was loud, it drowned out whoever was talking to her

my mother said exactly the same...but irritating noisy with background sounds 

Yes ! But it gets very wearing repeating everything ....either he doesn't hear....or hears totally wrong ! ,
