I've got two striplights in the kitchen. A four foot one and a two foot one in the small extension. The two foot one went ages ago and been having trouble wth the long one for a while. It finally went last night and was hoping it was just the starter. Bought new ones (or one anyway as they didn't have the other wattage one) put it in.......light didn't work then I suddenly thought...I have a spare tube so fought with the old one trying to get it out...eventually did and coulsn't get the replacement in 
Had to go next door to get phil to do it. That worked and he twiddled with other starter and on came the light
