A lucky mum has won £300,000 on a scratchcard - just days after her fiance proposed.

Distington woman Kelly Armstrong, 36, of Church Road, says it is a double celebration after she landed the top prize in the National Lottery’s Cashword game.

She was handed a cheque for her winnings at a special ceremony in Cockermouth this morning.

The delighted mum told the News & Star that partner Richard Dunn, 34, of Frizington, had asked her to marry him on Christmas Day, but they had planned to wed in 2016 to allow them time to save up.

An impulse scratchcard purchase at the Coop in Distington on Monday changed all that however, and the couple plans to wed in May.

Her name will be added to a roll of significant Lottery winners from west Cumbria.

They include former iron ore miner Joe Thomlinson from Maryport, who was Cumbria’s first jackpot winner, landing £1m in 1998, Maryport couple Elizabeth and George Thompson, who won £2.8m in 2001 and Callie Rogers who scooped almost £1.9m in 2003 at the age of just 16.
