For many years I have regularly received automated phone calls telling me that I have won a Caribbean cruise and to press 1 to get through - I must have "won" almost 100 holidays by now. This is obviously too good to be true and I have never taken the bait. I think it is either a phone call scam where if you press 1 your phone bill starts going through the roof, or a time share scam.
The phone number has always appeared as "International", so apart from being an American accent, there has been little I can do. That is until today when for the first time my phone showed the actual number. This is 00 1 626 273 8279. I have been able to trace this as coming from Alhambra, California. This number seems to be used by an agency as other people have reported this number as promoting lower credit card interest rates.
Being of a suspicious nature, I have reported this to the Trading Standards people who will investigate this and report it to the appropriate authorities. If, as is unlikely, I ever hear anything back, I will keep you updated.
