As many on here are posting about thunderstorms passing over their area, I guess we may get one in next few hours.

What I am asking is is it necessary to turn off all tvs and pcs when a thunderstorm is going on?
OH makes us all turn off TVs and pcs in the house while there's a storm.

Is he right or is he being a bit too cautious?

I always thought the main thing was to disconnect the aerial lead from the socket.
(I may be wrong, though.)

I once had lightning blow my video recorder up. It happened to next doors as well.

I never have....I think as Brisket said its only if you have an outside rooftop aerial...I'm cable so no worries!

we turn them off if the storm is overhead..we had lightening hit a cable junction a couple of years ago..it spurred down the lines and we lost a dvd player and a ps2.(the junction was down the street.)

Nothing has ever happened to me while a storm is over us we haven't turned the tv off or pc, but i'll probably will tonight now i said that

I've lost a printer/fax to a storm as did a load of people in my area - I would seriously recommend disconnecting phone lines from anything valuable and equipping yourself with a surge protector just in case.

But I would have though that Insurers would cover anything major blowing up.

After consulting with DH who deals with these things in our house, I believe some insurers are OK with lightning but I guess is depends on who your provider is as with all these things.
