Ah was it?

Yes, I tried classic google Slinki but when I clicked on the link it still went back to the nasty homepage. It won`t let me access anything.

I`ll get my computer pal to have a look at it for me.

Thanks for you help Slinki and everyone. Much appreciated.

Just tried your tip Fluffy. Still the same.

I checked that and it`s set at http://www.google.co.uk/.

I changed it to default and blank like you suggested Fluffy but homepage is still nasty.

I`ll use firefox until I get it fixed.

Thanks for all your help.

Good idea squiggle, thank you.

I would be able to uninstall but I don`t know what you mean about searching for leftover bits.

Could you tell me how to do that please?

I would think that using the 'Uninstall hardware/software' tool on the control panel (which is on the start menu) should take care of the 'bits'

Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing

i had a prob with i.e ages ago, when it would load a page i had never heard of as my home page, which meant it wouldn't let me go anywhere.

it was a ..not trojan.. but some nasty infection thing.. i had to run a few virus checker things to get rid of it..

if i remeber  more i will let you know.

Scotty, before doing anything else have you tried clearing the browser cache - that seemed to work for someone who had problems with their homepage. This was the advice they were given:

You should probably try to delete your web browser i.e. Google Chrome’s cache. Remember that this would include deleting the browsing and download history, cache, passwords, cookies and other saved data. Follow the below steps to delete cache:

  • Start Google Chrome and click on the wrench icon (settings) on the browser toolbar.
  • Now click on Tools and then click on Clear browsing data.
  • A new dialog will appear. Select the checkboxes which you wish to delete
  • Click on Clear browsing data button.

Ok, I`ve done that. I`ve uninstalled and reinstalled and it`s still there squiggle.

Thanks jacksonb. I think it is a virus. I`ll try running a virus checker.

I`ve now done that El Loro but it`s still there.

I`ll try a virus check. I hope it gets rid of it. If not I`ll get my pal over here to fix it for me.

I`m not good at techie things.

Thanks so much for all your help El Loro and everyone.

It doesn't always Fluffy and its always a good idea to check.  Just for info for anyone who wants to know just do a computer search, in this case for Chrome, and see if any files are remaining. Sometimes if there are files still remaining you cannot get a clean install.

Type [go] or [goog] and you'll notice that Google autocompletes using [https://www.google.com]. Here's the solution: press Shift+Delete when Google shows https://www.google.com as a suggestion. This way, you'll remove the URL from the list permanently (at least until you visit the SSL site again).

Thanks Blizzie.   I just tried your suggestion but as soon as [https://www.google.com] appears and I try shift + delete it goes straight back to the locked encrypted version. It won`t let me click on anything.

I`ve ran the anti virus scans that jackson suggested too but nothing is shifting it.

And just to add to it. My Firefox is now in Slovenian.  http://www.google.si/

Click on control panel, internet options, programs, manage add-ons, search providers, (is Google set as default?), click on provider you want to view and maybe you can disable SSL Beta (if it shows up)

Gave that a go Blizzie but SSL Beta wasn`t there. I disabled another couple of things in there that have bothered me in the past. I didn`t know how to do that before so thanks for that.

I`m going to leave it for now and get a pal to look at it for me. I`ve still got some access so it`s not too bad.

Many thanks to you and everyone for trying to help me. It`s very much appreciated.
