once upon a time I worked for Cable and Wireless as an international operator - job to get me through university.  Anyhoo whenever New Zealanders came on to get a number they always said "hang on till I get my pen"  think is they pronounce pen as pin and we had visions of them scratching a number out on a slate    as you were
