Hmm with regard to mashed potatoes.  I hate using a masher, so years ago after Delia Smith recommended, I tried using an electric mixer as less effort.  I found it far too gloopy as someone else mentioned here.

However I now use a ricer.  Much easier but as long as you do not overcook your potatoes still nice reasonably firm mash.  I would never go back to a masher now.

Favourite things to add to my mash, plain yoghurt, sour cream, creme fraiche for my plain mash.

Also I love garlic, cheese, mustard or pea and mint mash.  mmmmmm  Although I personally like experimenting with whatever food I have to hand to add to mash.  Some nice results, some not so nice.

The French rather than our mash however do a potato puree, much softer.  I did have some nice flavoured versions over there, however I still prefer the good old British mash.  Apart from roast potatoes mash is my hero.
