I used to always be polite Jen, for the same reason: just some poor bugger with a crap job, earning peanuts. However, having had so many who won't take a simple 'no thanks, I'm not interested' for an answer and want to know the ins and outs of why you're not interested and then start getting aggressive, I just cut out the middle bit now and put the phone down immediately they start waffling on with their blurb.
I also joined the Telephone Preference Service http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html which means that anyone now getting through is either breaking the law or ringing from a country where it doesn't apply. I suppose I should therefore ask for their details etc. when they do get through so as to report them, but can't really be faffed!
Having said that, there is of course a difference between a legit' company trying to sell you something and scams which prey on the vulnerable who are conned into giving them money and personal information and believing, as in this example, that there is a problem with their computer, (presumably plenty of people fall for them or they wouldn't continue?) Those callers know what they're doing, so I don't blame people for 'having fun' with them although I personally couldn't be bothered.
