Does your High St. have enough of them?

Last week my local Co-op had a Costa coffee machine fitted - despite that chain having 2 cafes within a short walk of said supermarket.

Yesterday my local boozer had a Latte machine installed.

I'm assuming the existing 3000 local cafes are failing to cope with demand.

We’ve only got 2 proper coffee houses ....both Costa

Baz

I absolutely adore local coffee shops with (gasp) waiting staff.

I officially hate Starbucks, Java, Costa etc. You queue to place your order, queue to pay, then queue to pick up your order... progress? Give me a starched white pinnie any day!

Coffee has a sexy image (God knows how)

Monkeys sell tea (PG Tips) and has cheapened the brand

And of course American Cola arriving on the café scene as an alternative for young people around that same time.

I think there's a culture around coffee too

The machines, like you mention, are very nice indeed

A teapot  - not so much

Well, yes: the rise of coffee shops - and, more specifically, the very expensive coffee machines they use - has a lot to do with the decline of the tea shop, and takeaway tea in general.

Dave Gorman did a very good routine about this:

(Do stick around for a belter of an analogy at the end. However between the laughs, he does make some serious and well-observed points.)

Great point Eugene

Whilst tea used to be quite exclusive now many exotic teas can be made with a £6 kettle and a little bag in a cup

Exotic coffee mustn't be instant in a cup - it must be bean, then ground - even though there are far fewer coffees than teas (there are many exotic teas), tea is still inferior to coffee.

There are many reasons, I'm sure. One reason to me is like meat and salad … one is serious one is not.

Coffee is almost like a meal - it's heavier and powerful. Tea is light and refreshing and thus has a disposable quality.

Or am I mad?

I love coffee, I love café culture, I love chatting and people watching - the whole caboodle. We have a Costa

Prices are a disgrace

I am a big advocate of coffee shops of all kind, independant and chain. As Saint said, it is a great place to spend an hour, relaxing, people watching and chatting (I have actually made friends in mine).

I started out at a Costa, that closed, but I stayed in touch with the staff. Now I frequent a Caffé Nero which is in a lovely position in the city.

People may slag them off, but in my book it is way better than drinking alcohol, smoking and even buying newspapers. It's a relatively cheap pastime and most arguments against them are quite weak. It's a place to enjoy a simple pleasure.

We are blessed in Sheffield with having a large variety of chains and independents and I have tried quite a few of them. Great places to meet friends.

Yes, the prices on the face of it are rather high, but when you factor in everything you get, it's not so bad.

I managed to do a pub and a Costa heading home this evening!

I was a bit sniffy about them until around Jan/Feb this year I had a 50 minute wait on the concourse at Inverness railway station so rather than freeze I took the plunge with a mug of cappuccino within the confines of a warm Costa café.
