I don't like coach travel, never have, so for me it would have to be by train.

 

I prefer the coach.

I really like the train - its more of an 'event'.

I love the train station - the sounds, the smells.

Travelling by train also lets you see sights never normally seen

It would have to be train for me , cos like El Loro , I'm not keen on coach travel ...but it is a big price difference

I'd prefer to travel by train but on my money it's prohibitively expensive so I have no option but to go by coach - don't mind it really except when I have a screaming baby behind me all the way or some eejit that puts their feet on the back of my seat so their goes dig into my back

Train every time.   I think coaches are so cramped - even the decent ones that they use a rail replacement from time to time.

Travelling from London- Victoria to Eastbourne, rarely seems to be much cheaper than by train, so it's just not worth the extra time spent travelling for me.

I don't mind either, but the train is faster.

Anyone know anything about rail cards, would it work out cheaper for me to have one 

If your travelling regularly, they definitely are cheaper. I used to travel down to Winchester 3 or 4 times a year and the savings more than covered the cost of the railcard.

Ohhh that's good, I was looking at day returns but may stay longer sometimes, I was quite surprised that they depart every half hour 

 

 

yep...I often go up to Scotland and travel by train, its cheaper than taking the car for me 

I don't really fancy going on the coach even though it is cheaper, I'm not planning on going for a few weeks so I'll have a look around for the best price

I would prefer train travel if it were like the Vic Reeves adverts, but alas my recent journeys have been hot, crowded and extremely uncomfortable. Given the price difference I would go by coach, but would only use coach if the distance were not overly great.

 

 

Trains are generally my preferred mode.

 

However, on a recent excursion we ended up being shuttled part of the way by coach anyway as a stretch of track was closed for repair!

 

 

Since my folks retired and moved to Inverness I've made the trip up by train from Kings Cross several times - it takes around 8 hours - but it's definitely my preferred mode - even though they think i'm mad not getting a flight instead.

We use the train a lot. In general you should book tickets as soon as you have decided the journey. Normally you can book 3 months ahead. Look first at the company in charge of the route. Then compare their price to companies who may be in charge of part of the route. Sometimes it may be cheaper to book two singles. Sometimes you can save by splitting a journey. ( I recently saved forty pounds in this way for our group of four merely going to Barnsley) Sometimes first class offers a better bet since they give out free food and booze! East Coast do. We only know senior railcards, if you are feeling lucky you can book a three year one for seventy poond. This autumn people over 55 can get special fares. If anyone wants any specific advice then give me a shout!

I much prefer the train, when i travel to Birmingham i have always got the train but since i have to pay for 2 of the three too now it's just too expensive. I try to go when i have a lift  seeing as the train fare for 3 is about double the cost of the petrol!!

They are usually cheaper if you book in advance and online I found Aimee. Its generally cheaper off-peak too 

Aims.. you need to book as far in advance as possible.   Go on trainline.com  - put your dates in and have a look.    as an example... if you were booking six weeks in advance you could go on 31st october, returning next day for £7.50 outwards and £10.50 back.     As opposed to about £35 each way paying on the day.

Train definitely.  Aimee the best time to buy cheap train tickets is when they are first released, usually 12 weeks before.

yeah... as everyone says, as early as possible because the cheapies disappear quickly.

Aims... I just looked again.. remember to scroll through the different times during the day - it's actually possible to get seven quid each way - with no changes.

Thanks for the links and advice everyone  I'll read through it as sometimes it would be a last minute thing so wouldn't be able to book in advance, I'll get used to it I suppose  £40 everytime is a bit steep for me 

I'm glad you have had some good advice! I'm 3G iphone struggling in Whitby and couldn't possibly go through all the sites! I can't search that well until next Sunday.
