SO glad it wasn't Norwich.  That's what I call Wurzel country (don't ask!!!)

I will ask - you cheeky get, I bet you've never been there!  Wurzels are derived from Somerset, which is the opposite side of the country to Norwich.  I bet you're one of those people who think Norfolk people talk with a Somerset accent.

Sad that Norwich didn't get it as it's got loads of past and present culture and historical significance that doesn't have a high profile outside the region.

Ok, Norwich doesn't have any mass appeal pop culture like 'The Beatles' or a great football club but who needs to reminded about the Cavern Club or Liverpool FC's Cop terracing for the billionth time?

Exactly my point, a low profile.  Your typifies the reason why Norwich would have been a good choice!

Norwich has got a long cultural story and was England's second city for a while in the 12th Century.  I did say Norwich doesn't have much of a present day mass market pop culture but who wants to hear about The bl***dy Beatles for the millionth time?  I thought cultural awareness was about culturally learning things we didn't know about a city rather than retreading of a pop-culture tourist trail that everyone and his dog already knows about.

Carnelian, Liverpool didn't win it, Derry did!!

I know, I was using Liverpool as an example as a past city of culture where part of the justification seemed to be mass market pop culture such as Liverpool FC (and its self styled, best fans in the world) and the tedium of The Beatles and Mersey Beat (yawn).  Wrong reasons IMO.

I've got no problem with Derry getting it but just think that Norwich would have made a good city of culture as it tends to have a low profile in the national media.

I do...they were and are and always will be the best band ever.
Not sure who Norwich has produced in the way of the arts - performing or otherwise.
BUT I will agree about the whole Liverpool worship thing generally - the Beatles really were th the only thing worth talking about to come out of there.

I don't hate the Beatles but I do feel almost every aspect of their music, attitudes, personalities, cultural significance, upbringing has been retreaded so many times in the popular media.

I often feel that the cultural significance of bands and transient fashions are vastly overstated by the contemporary media because that's what people of those associated generations want to hear.

A good example of overstating cultural importance of pop culture and particularly music is the recent BBC documentary featuring early 80s band, Heaven 17 about their early 80s album "Penhouse and Pavement".

I've never heard so much pretentious twaddle and undue praise heaped on what could at best be described as a reasonably good but obviously dated early 80s album.  The reverential way the band and others talked about it you'd think it was universally regarded as one of the best albums ever released.
