This might be rubbish advice but could you uninstall THEN reinstall but uncheck the sponsor/pop up box?
Umm, go to Control Panel, and uninstall the program, was it Windows Live Messenger, maybe?
Then go Google search for Windows Live Messenger, install from the main site, and if you get a choice, choose "Custom Install" and uncheck any boxes which offer add-ons with the installation.

Hello me hinny
Succinct is polite of you it was just not really knowing the techygubbins!
You are going to need to do more than just remove and reinstall unfortunately. I am investigating give me a few minutes.
Microsoft are absolute arseholes.

Found this on a tech site its the among many.
It also updates your hosts file as well which is tricky to fix how good are you with computers? (not a major problem if you cant change this so dont panic)
quote:Hi, I did a bit of research for you. The CiD program is bundled with MSN Messenger plus. The below will help you remove it, but from what i've read its not the only software that uses this CiD.
Uninstall Messenger Plus using Add/Remove programs in your Control Panel. You do NOT need to uninstall the Windows or MSN Messenger itself. Uninstall anything that says "CiD" or "Sponser".
If this doesn't work then do a spyware/virus scan, this might pick it up and remove it. If you don't have any spyware/virus program, i would recommend http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html This is quite likely to detect and remove it.
See how you get on.
