I've never done a help thread before.... be gentle with me
My sister went for a smear test a few weeks ago. She's 38 and she hadn't been for one for years. I think the recent publicity surrounding Jade Goody's death convinced her it was time.
Last week she was called back because they had found abnormal cells. Now as far as I am aware this is relatively common so she (nor I) worried too much. The day she went in they said they were going to remove the cells. She was offered the chance to come back in a few days and have the procedure under general anesthetic but she agreed to have it done there and then under a local. They removed the cells and then cauterized the area. She has told me that during it she was in a great deal of pain, and the only reason she did not ask them to stop was the thought of having to come back again. (she hates hospitals). After they had finished she was told that she would have results back regarding the cells being cancerous in a few weeks and that she shouldn't worry even if it was postive because everything had been removed.
Is this normal procedure for an abnormal smear test? Someone has told my mum that when they went to have this done they just removed a very small area of tissue and weren't offered a general anesthetic, and didn't need to be cauterized.
My mum is now really concerned...... and I would like to put her mind at rest if possible.
