In 1971 when I was at secondary school we were asked to write an essay simply relaying what we did on the actual census day. The best two in the school (and I think from various other schools) were locked in a vault in the town hall to be opened at a date in the future (can't remember how long). Mine was chosen - I remember writing about going to youth club and a fight breaking out between a gang of skinheads and Hells Angels along with all the family stuff what we had for dinner etc etc. I'd love to be able to read it now.

I quite like the idea of being a bit of Croydon's history.

But I think it's locked in a vault - not to be opened for perhaps a hundred years.

I may make some enquires though.

Me thinks there will be a lot of people being fined though how will they police it will be interesting.

On or around the 27th it says. You don't think they're going to fine everyone who happened to be away on holiday or business, do you?

It doesn't have to be filled in tomorrow - it should be sent as soon as possible. If the form hasn't been received shortly after the 28th, reminders will be sent. Also census officials will visit the houses where no form received - they will offer to help the household complete the form.

The fines will only be charged on people who refuse to complete the form.
