Then:-

9p + 6a =?

though as there are 9 pears and the apples cost 9 pence one could just add 4 and 6 then multiply the sum by 9 so just arithmetic (in this example )

I know it was a very simple example, but it's still the basic rules of Algebra that enables that to work.
