Bumping for tonight's episode which starts at 20.00

The wall challenge this time is apple charlotte with custard for one team and Paris-Brest with cherries in kirsch syrup for the other. My mother would make apple charlotte when I was a child as my brother preferred it to what she called crispy apple pie (though is apple crumble) which is what I preferred. She alternated between the two She also made a charlotte using tomatoes and bits of bacon. I assume John Torode's version of apple charlotte is a bit more sophisticated than what my mother made as it's hardly challenging.

Then it's off to cook lunch for staff at the Wellcome Genome Campus in Cambridgeshire.

My mother's apple charlotte was nice as was her tomato and bacon version. We rarely had custard as my mother didn't like it (probably because the custard her mother made when she was young was not nice )

The custard I had at school dinners was just about edible

There was only one time when the food at the school time was a disaster, the main course which no-one could eat.

Mine was a disaster most days ....cos most days there was darn custard ...or rice pudding with jam....or suet spotted dick And they made you sit there until you’d eaten it !

So you never felt inclined to go up and say "please, can I have some more"

Too bliddy right ....I was too busy smearing the custard around the plate ....then putting another persons plate on top of mine before I handed it in  ....or dropping bits of suet under the table ! And don’t get me started on full fat milk that had been left in the crates in the sun all morning....and waxy straws
