Day 19: 'Why do people watch this show?'

Prince Lorenzo posed a query to Martin earlier today – and it's one that we're constantly asking ourselves.

Not really! We know we all watch Celebrity Big Brother for the handsome men, pretty girls, wild antics and emotional involvement. But Lorenzo's question was posed from the point of view of someone in a slightly gloomy mood. He wondered why people would tune in to see people suffering arguments, misery and darkness. Maybe he's homesick for his mansion and his dogs? Maybe he's missing that model he liked so much... or maybe he just got out of the wrong side of bed this morning?

"Why do the British public like this show?" he asked Martin, apropos of nothing.

Martin philosophised as he responded. "I guess it's like gangsters and murderers. You watch it because you can't do it yourself, you know?"

They continued in this vein for a while, with Martin trying to hammer it home that BB offers people a means to spectate on human behaviour, making a couple of judgement calls here and there without having to be judged themselves.

"Well, I've let it all go. If this is what they want, I'll just go with it," came the Prince's slightly defeatist response.

Poor Loz. Clearly the series of events over the past three weeks have got him down. Whether it was being forced into leopard print underpants yesterday or if it was a precognitive vision of himself in a thong later on in the afternoon, Prince Lorenzo is starting to feel the harsh end of the Big Brother experience. Let's hope our friend's spirits lift soon. You never know what's around the next Big Brother corner.

Day 19: After the plunge

It was a close one but in the battle to see which man's naked flesh could hold the most toilet plungers, Lorenzo triumphed over Martin, a mighty 20 protruding from his thong-clad physique after time was called. As a result his team (Coleen, Julian and Ashley) won a takeaway of pepperoni pizza and salad while the losing team (Harvey, Julie and The Situation) was forced to eat gruel. How Dickensian.

As a curious addendum, Prince Lorenzo was given a large red button. This was not simply a thoughtful accessory with which to adorn his personal space but a way of inflicting a penalty on Martin’s losers. Every time Lorenzo presses the button, the losing team (except Julie) will have to plunge into the hot tub.

What larks... or maybe not. The Prince has so far been too much of a nice guy to push the button. Despite Harvey warning him that restraint will lead to Big Brother “getting on ya” he seems to be on strike. He wouldn’t have done very well against Conor in the previous series’ white room task now would he...

Day 19: Sometimes it’s hard to be a woman

While younger fillies came and went, she was the untouchable matriarch. But this week the tide has turned against Julie. Along with Martin and Prince Lorenzo, she is facing the public vote, a fact that the housemates have just this night discovered.

Martin and the Prince took this news on the chin; the former’s default setting is cheeky laughter while the latter is constantly channelling the humble vibe. Julie, however, did not see this coming and is not happy at all.

With the exception of her dear pal, Julian (who is visibly shaken by the news), most of the housemates think Julie had it coming. Yesterday’s awkward news that she’d been covertly discussing the Prince made her a grand total of no friends. She pleaded ‘nomnesia’ when gently confronted by his majesty. However, she has crossed a line with this gentle soul. In a conversation with Coleen, Ashley and Martin, Lorenzo showed a new, firm streak.

Coleen was also unsympathetic. She, along with Ashley and Martin, are no longer buying the ‘House nana’ role. The foursome were in a jocular, unrepentant mood and are so relaxed about this evening’s events that they have now leapt into the hot tub. This has left Julie to regroup on the sofas with Julian and a rather limp Situation.

Even if you think she’s misplayed her cards recently, it’s hard not to sympathise with Julie. Her in-House status has plummeted in a matter of days leaving her head spinning. It’s going to be a bad week for Goodyear and – what’s more – her nomination on the heels of five evicted females is another threat to the very minimal female numbers.

Tammy Wynette was more right than she knew. Sometimes it’s very hard to be a woman.
