I guess he gave up quite a while ago, stuck it out for the wages, and is now resigned to whatever the outcome.
How Katie can honestly think she is having a serious conversation with Bear, and honestly think he is interested, makes me question her intelligence.....

I think this is not his scene. The remaining housemates apart from Sam are professional reality players and will do anything literally.
