I think it slides into self esteem issues because she does it to make everyone like her. A show off will say something and then sit back. They don't care if you react or not - they get satisfaction because they do know these people and you don't and it ends there. Someone like Paula has to be better at everything and name drops because she wants people to be envious/jealous of what she's got. She waits for people to question her on these things and if you don't, she sulks - it's all about positive reinforcement. In some ways Rylan and her kept giving each other reinforcement as they both appear to have self esteem issues. For Paula, self medicating with booze and drugs is another indication as life feels better when you see it through the blurr of narcotics
