I would never use one of those stalls, always go to a reputable dealer. I passed a stall near work and asked how much they would give for 22ct gold. They said ÂĢ9 something a gram (I think). That's shocking! Check the current day's gold price on the net, then take off anything between 10% and 20% and that would be a fair price, and what a reputable dealer would give. After all, they do have their costs, to melt down, sort etc.

so do you go to a jewler? I have been thinking about it for quite a while, not got a lot.. a neighbour went to one in the market to sell an old watch he got over ÂĢ200. I have just few bits and pieces, including silver that was valued over 12 years back but people say that value is different as it was for insurance purposes.
I hav couple relly old bits jewlery that was my garndmothers who i loved dearly and am torn as to what to do. my son is not interested in any thing "memorablier" and his wife is some one i would not even discuss it with to be honest.
I have a grand daughter who is only 3 years old. I feel with her it might be lik her mother, look down on my stuff. so i end up thinking what would my grandmother say! she would say what ever makes you happy dear, so that does not really help me.. I could seriously do with the money though, thats for sure!! any advise? opionions?
Thanks for this thread to lady who started it, its been an eye opener and very helpful.

If the old jewellery is "nice" I would take it to a jeweller who buys 2nd hand items, and see if they are interested in buying it for resale. If it's really nice, then perhaps an auction would be better.

If it's just run of the mill items, I'd look up a local jeweller/dealer who says they buy scrap gold, and see what they have to offer. If you are selling just for scrap, they don't seem to take too much notice of the stones as far as value is concerned. I reckon they think thats a bonus to them! Do check the price of gold on the day though. As I said, if they offer you less than 20% of the day's price, they are taking advantage imo. Oh, and don't forget, different carats pay at different rates.
