He was indeed Velvet.
In the darkness of Coronavirus, his spirit shone like a beacon.
RIP Captain Tom
RIP Captain Tom an officer and a gentlemanðĒâïļ
RIP Captain Tom. An absolute hero and so late in life too after already more than doing his duty for King and Country (as it was).
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has encouraged members of the public to clap for Captain Sir Tom Moore at 18:00 GMT on Wednesday.
After all the calls for some sort of memorial, a 'Clap for Captain Tom' seems rather pathetic - unless that's just a starter and he's got something more memorable planned for later.

I think it's just meant as a "starter": something the GBP can get involved in quickly and easily.
At least, I hope that's the case...
FYI: BBC1 are showing a tribute "Captain Tom: We Salute You" tonight at 7.30pm. It replaces "The Bidding Room".

Looking at the BBC website, it looks as if it is a repeat of the documentary they showed last May.

Yes: I didn't recognize the title at first, but it's the programme presented by Michael Ball.
Not clear at the moment if it's a "revised repeat" or not...
The thing about Capt Sir Tom Moore is that he's a household name now but in 15 to 20 years' time his name will be a pub quiz question. Celebs and MPs are bandwagon-jumping to virtue signal.
Capt. Tom's charity drive should not have been needed if we funded the NHS adequately. The amount of taxpayers' money Bozo has thrown at his inept and unqualified private-sector cronies during the pandemic would have been far better spent funding the NHS.
A fitting tribute to Capt. Sir Tom Moore would be a statue in his home town where he will still be a local hero long after the rest of the country has forgotten his contribution.

To be fair, Capt. Tom's fundraising was never intended to fill a need, but was started as a purely personal "Thank You" for his hip operation - a bit of a grander gesture than sending the nurses a box of chocolates, with the added bonus that he got to exercise that hip. IMO, the public response to him (and more obviously to Marcus Rashford later on) always had a bit of an "edge" to it, and was - by and large - in the tacit knowledge that this really was something that the Government should be doing without prompting. As with Government ministers turning up to support food banks, I think (and again I stress "IMO") that anyone in power who doesn't realise the irony at play here isn't paying attention.
As for a statue: one suggestion I heard a few weeks ago (and it appears to have been repeated in this morning's Metro) was to have a sculpture commissioned for the 4th plinth at Trafalgar Square. That would of course be a temporary siting, and afterwards it could be moved to a permanent position in his home town as you suggest.
