Can anyone give me some ideas/recipes for low cholesterol meals? I've been googling and just getting all confused Confused

From what I can see it's low fat, etc. but I already follow that kind of diet. I only have skimmed milk, eat loads of fresh veg and fruit, use my steamer constantly and NEVER fry food.

I'm totally gutted because a few months ago I developed a cholesterol patch on my eyelid .... Xanthelasma .... and last week noticed it has started on my other eyelid AND underneath my eye Frowner

I feel like elephant man and along with everything else I have to deal with it's the final straw for me Crying

Any suggestions for meals would be good cos I can't think of anything else I should be doing with my diet to stop any more appearing

Replies sorted oldest to newest

Hmmm I suppose one more tablet won't make any difference to the boatload I already take.

I am at hospital next week so I'll see what they say I suppose

Tiddles I've never heard of that...where can I get bread like that?

Sorry to be a miserable cah...but this is the final limit for me ... bad enough having all the shite I have from the condition I have ...but these deposits around my eyes are making me feel like I want to hide away and never show my face to the world again ... the final straw before I go into meltdown I fear (Where's Gyps lol?)

It's low saturated fats that you need to cut down on. But, sounds like you may be doing that already.

When my cholesterol level was raised (not too high, only about 5.6 or something like that) I started to take Benecol, as a cholesterol reducing drink, that seemed to do the trick with me. I've since changed to the Tesco brand of cholesterol reducing drink which is much cheaper, and still seems to do the trick.

I know there are medicines they can give you if they feel it is necessary, so perhaps you need to go back to your doctor and talk it through. Thumbs Up

My MIL had them, and I never knew what they were until you just told me....

aww Pepsi! No consolation when you feel like that, but chances are folk won't even notice the patches unless you point them out.
Your diet sounds good, but might be worth trying some of those plant sterol-type spread thangs, and oats and soya protein are said to be good for lowering the " bad" LDL . Docs usually advise a diet change and monitor levels before prescribing meds, but sometimes that isn't what's needed, and they might suggest a statin or niacin or something.

But please don't get confused, the probiotic drinks are not the same as the ones that lower your cholesterol. Benecol is the only drink as far as I am aware that lowers your cholesterol, it comes in vanilla and strawberry. The probiotic drinks give you beneficial bacteria in your gut.

I know from experience (my hubby) that high cholesterol can run in families and diet makes no difference to it whatever. You doctor must prescribe a statin. But also please continue with the Benecol drinks or yoghurts or spreads because with hubby the statin alone does not do the job. When my OH was put on a statin I stopped buying the Benecol drink and his cholesterol shot up again.

Tesco's own is also a Cholesterol Reducing Drink squiggle, not probiotic, and sits along side the Benecol ones on the shelf. Nod However, there are more calories in each bottle more sugar, and more saturated fat, but still not huge amounts. It is cheaper.

Aw pepsi (((S))) dunno if you remember, but I posted on both purple and chat about this.. I too have HIGH cholestorol.. had an op on one eye to remove the ick (harldy anyone notices -so they say) so I got it removed, big scaramanga on me eyelid... it healed to look like a crease... one year later, the other eye Roll Eyes Im waiting for appointment to remove that also. (ask doc for a referal.. not sore at all, and over in 10 mins)

recipes are a nightmare... I almost lived on vegetable soups (home made)
NO
white bread
white rice
cakes
fizzy juice
cheese
tuna (oily)
3 eggs per week
no pasta
no potatoes
in fact cut all STARCH from your diet.

might not help you cholestorol levels (i'm still at 8.1) Eeker bu t you will lose weight.

I firmly believe it is stress related.. Doctors say no it isn't, but I did exactly as instructed and STILL it showed on my other eyelid Frowner Frowner Frowner

I just accept now, that even though I'm not fat at all, I still have too many fat cells in my blood Roll Eyes

I'm rhesus negative du ... wonder if that's an issue?

That's good to know Jenny. I haven't come across that one, I usually shop online from Sainsburys and its probably quite a new addition. But I wouldn't be without some cholesterol reducing product, unfortunately my OH can only tolerate the drink and never eats bread so he can't have the spread and doesn't like yoghurts. It does annoy me when doctors still say you can reduce your cholesterol by diet alone, you just can't. And I wish they wouldn't put people's lives at risk telling them to get it down with diet alone.

Thanks everyone Smiler

I've just been to the shops and I've picked up some benecol stuff

Really appreciate your input Hug

I had a fasting blood test done just before I moved...rang up my old doc's for the results and my notes have been sent off to my new doc...whjo hasn't got them yet!! They are in transit apparently. I see the nurse next week so I'll ask her, I'm also at hospital next week to see the consultant so we'll see what's what Smiler

You can't reduce your blood cholesterol by diet at all ( I shall now use this time to revise on you all Big Grin)
There is a very complicated mechanism used to control blood cholesterol levels as cholesterol is vital but too much causes problems. This mechanism uses lots of highly complex proteins and also uses a lot of ATP (energy). The mechanism evolved when lives were a lot shorter and therefore there is not enough of these proteins produced to keep the mechanism running correctly throughout our now much longer human life. A statin is a drug which represses the synthesis of cholesterol and therefore does the job that the mechanism should be doing. Smiler

I'm glad you've got the benecol stuff Pepsi and that's a good start. When you see the consultant next week don't be fobbed off. They must give you a statin straight away it would be dangerous for you to leave it any longer with the high reading you've got now. Take plenty of that cholesterol reducing stuff until you can get to see the consultant. Good luck, let us know how you get on once you've seen him/her.

If I'm not mistaken, it would be no good to drink, say two or three or even more of those drinks in a day hoping that it will bring down the cholesterol level quicker, as there is a limit per day that is effective. I think that limit is one of the drinks per day. (Does that make sense?)

See I was thinking not on a long-term basis, no just one a day, but just until the OP gets to the consultant, as the OP hasn't been taking them up to now. My reasoning might be all wrong but on the other hand I don't think it would do any harm.

I have them on my eyes, I absolutely hate them. My brother has has them too, he had his cholesterol tested and it was normal. He had them removed but they just came back, so I just use make up over them if they are particularly bugging me.

I've read up loads on them, and it seems if they are caused by diet, you can reduce them and if you have them removed they are less likely to come back. If hereditary (like mine) then we're kinda stuck with them.

I keep my fringe a bit long too so I can hide them Big Grin

My GP suggested that I get my cholesterol level down by diet as Simvastatin has bad side effects for a number of patients including me. He told me to eat plenty of oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and tuna. The problem is my good cholesterol level is low and has shown no sign of improving after a few years of eating correct foods in my diet.

Oh I would defo recommend them, and they can only do good as far as I can see. Just the one a day though. Thumbs Up

I tentatively suggest that what your GP really means is that he/she doesn't want to shell out for Simvastatin for you. The diet you were shown is good and healthy but will not, on its own, reduce your cholesterol.

Obviously cut out all the bad stuff salt most dairy products bad fat as in meat fat etc smoking if you are a smoker is bad for you , fish oils sardines etc are all good ,when my cholestral was high my doctor told me what was good and bad for me to eat ,also if it gets bad they put you on medication a lot of what you eat and dont eat is common sense really it worked for me good luck.

Thanks again all of you Hug

Jenny I don't have arthritis as such...I have an overlapping autoimmune diease that affects my joints, soft tissue and skin. (mixed connective tissue disease)

After reading all your suggestions I can only see 2 things that I can cut out of my diet... my chocolate traets and smoking Roll Eyes ... why would it have to be my 2 favourite things Mad Laugh

I'll stick to the bencol things and also ask my consultant next week Thumbs Up

I still want to hide my head in a paper bag though Ninja
