Going down to comet/currys tomorrow to look at either an ipad2 or a mini laptop... any advice would be great, bit unsure at the moment. Can do my work on a laptop and take it with me to work on at uni... but an ipad just seems more "in" and everything. Wouldn't be able to do my work then.

Got a pc at home at the moment, abit stuck at the min... I know its alot more expensive the ipad aswell. Is it just internet and thats it? Whats it got that the laptop doesn't? And how can they justify the ÂĢ300+ pricetags.

Depends what you want it for and how technical your requirements are

Cons

No DVD drive(s)

No USB drives (connection via Apple standard leads)

No physical keyboard, holding up device for long periods of keying is tiresome

Software for study may be expensive depending on your study needs

Software for study may be not be available/compatible, depending on your study needs

Very small memory capacity for price, for example 16gb compared 400gb for a similarly priced laptop

iTunes

Pros

Portability

No physical keyboard, good for taking notes,

Better reading experience (although a Kindle's better but monochrome)

Solid state drive, should be more sturdy with faster boot up times

My friend has an ipad 2 and he loves it, for me though, as I use a USB dongle I don't know how that would work.......but, I have been looking at tablets and if I were to get one I like the Blackberry Playbook......I'll probably never get one as I do like keys you can press (on phones and PCs)....I also like the look of the Duo ones, Dell i think, where you have the option of a keyboard or tablet but i'm not sure how portable these are, I daren't go and look as I'll want one and I'm poor!!!

The Devil In Diamante

Just been currys earlier, got new headphones, portable speakers and a new internet cable (old one was broke).

Didn't bother with laptop, issue has been solved as my Dad said he will give me his old one to use for Uni, so looking at the ipad2... however, I don't want to spend ÂĢ300+ on one and find out that I have to fork out another ÂĢ50 on apps and stuff. I had a quick go at one in Currys, seems great... however, do you have to pay for all this ibook, movies and music etc.? Is there anything on it thats actually free?

Not to my knowledge, as far as I'm aware 'Free' and 'iTunes' are oxymorons. Almost everything on iTunes can be bought legitimately elsewhere for less and sometimes considerably less.  You do pay top whack on iTunes.  MP3 files of Beatles reissues, anyone?? Only ÂĢ17, more than the CD version but with no resale value!

But with an iPad, you're buying into a lifestyle statement that says you're kool, so you should afford to pay that bit more for the same thingz if you want to be in the Apple kool club!

Tablets are all the rage at the min, m'dear. I've got one here (it's the boy's) - it's not bad, you can pretty much do everything you would on a PC, except forumming or blogging cos the touchpad is a pain in the rectum for long conversations.

I can't remember if it's got flash or not (think it has?), but have a butchers while you're out persuing x

I have an iPad, and I like it a lot. It's limited for work and such, though, in that you can't store documents and such. It's fabulous for reading your email and browsing the internet in bed.

There are a LOT of free apps out there. I make it a point not pay more than $1.99 for an app, but I have any number of free ones on both my iPhone and my iPad.

I also use it to watch movies and TV episodes that I have downloaded, while I'm on the bus (you know, when I tire of reading Great Literary Works )
