From what I understand this is the third time in as many days that this house has been targeted!!

Gotta wonder why a masked gang would want to burgle that particular house 3 times???  The householder, and two other people have apparently been arrested.

I can see a whole new Tony Martin furor again

edit:  I believe that when people enter your house, they have broken the law and a person should have the right to defend themselves.  Our laws on this definitely need updating as no one has time to google what reasonable force means when they're faced with a masked gang!

I'm a five foot two woman.

"Reasonable force" for me would have to be to completely disable/kill any intruder.

I'm not big enough to knock them out with a punch, or strong enough to hold them down until the police arrive.

So if I was confronted by a masked intruder, my only choice to stop them attacking me or ransacking my house would be to cave their skull in or stab them.

I suppose there has to be some sort of control over these things.  If some one has entered your house, but haven't harmed you and you beat the bejaysus out of them, that doesn't seem very reasonable.  But I don't think the sentences for the crime should be as clear cut as they are.  You wouldn't have committed the crime, if the other person hadn't broken into your house, therefore you were forced to some degree into taking the action.

Having said that, we had our house broken into a few years ago when I houseshared with 3 other girls...if I met the person who did it I'd like to give them a smack

From what I've read, there were four masked men breaking in and the police were there by midnight, so they hadn't waited until the house occupiers were bound to be deep in sleep.

To me, that sounds like more than 'just a burglary'.

that's what I thought Blizz especially as this house has been targeted repeatedly in the last week or so   I don't mean to be rude, but it's not in an affluent area, so I doubt they're there after the 55" plasma and lady of the house's bling

One of the reports quoted a neighbour as saying that the 29 year old was 'a lad who had lots of visitors to the house'.

My first thought was drugs might be involved.

I actually agree with this. However contrary to public perceptions, that is generally how the law pans out in practise.

Consider the Tony Martin case: a man with a history of firearms offences obtained an illegal shotgun, then hid in wait for potential burglars, only to shoot one in the back while he was trying to escape. The burglars were unarmed and at no time was Martin physically threatened. In the cold light of day, I think most would find it difficult to consider that "self defence" or "reasonable force".

However shortly after the Martin case, there was another, less-publicized incident where two men were surprised in their home late at night by an armed burgler. The men were attacked, and in the scuffle the burglar was stabbed with his own knife. The jury had no trouble in finding the men not guilty on the grounds of self-defence...

You old cynic you, he might have been a young christian starting his own bible group....

stonks

so they've let the young man and his girl friend from the property go but kept the father.  Apparently the burglar that died was on bail for another burglary in Tamworth just down the road from me   and they (Police) have arrested another member from the group that did the burglary

i just know i'd defend my family by whatever means-i could shout-'im calling the police' and they might leg it

or

if i shouted the same thing and they continued to rob my home i might take a different attitude-which would involve me protecting family/property and i couldnt give a flying f*ck how i did it-cos they shouldnt be there in the first place
