You know the usual stuff...

"go fetch a bucket of steam"

"can you get me a left handed screw driver"

"go to stores and ask for a long stand"

"see if you can borrow John's glass hammer"

I didn't/haven't, I was too astute for that   Always had me wits about me  And now, I'm too long in the tooth to be taken in

However, it takes me back to someone that had to go and ask for a tin of tartan paint

Back in the early seventies I took my first summer job, gardening at the local hospital. The first day they sacked one of the porters, and I was suddenly a porter earning pretty decent money for a student. During the first week someone 'phoned and asked if I could bring a Monkey Bar to Ward 8?
I thought that I wasn't going to get taken in by that so did nothing.
Next day I was hauled before Matron for an interview without coffee, where she explained that next time the ward sister requested something then I had to comply. A Monkey Bar was the apparatus by which injured people pull themselves up in bed. How we laughed! (Not)

For my younger readers, Matron was the senior nurse who ran the Hospital before the days of several lines of managers.
