Veteran broadcaster Bruce Forsyth is to hold talks with the BBC about his future on Strictly Come Dancing after it emerged he faces taking a massive paycut to carry on presenting the series.
Bruce was one of several of the BBC's best-known names who were told by BBC director-general Mark Thompson last night that they face salary cuts of up to 50 per cent. Other stars whose salaries are likely to be affected include Terry Wogan, Jeremy Clarkson and Graham Norton.
A source, who was at last night's meeting, told the Daily Mirror: "Mark Thompson made a long speech about the difficult situation the BBC was in and read out a lot of figures that not everyone in the audience kept up with. He was trying to justify and explain why people are going to face really tough negotiations.
"It was a grim speech and many people in the room were shocked at how far the cuts will go."
The news comes just as Bruce begins formal negotiations about his contract for this year's series of Strictly Come Dancing. It is believed he could see his salary slashed from last year's ÂĢ900,000 to ÂĢ400,000 this year.
Insiders now fear that the 81-year-old will decide it is not worth his while carrying on with the heavy workload that the show involves.
Can you get by on ÂĢ400,000, remember it may be a struggle, well it certainly seems it to that old fart, and the so called heavy work load, what a t o sser!
