I know what you mean - just feel sorry for him and he seems like a nice guy - but thought he was Ok ish - think he was very nervous

He does seem a like a nice guy no doubt about it - just... not a very good singer.

Having said that, I'm just not keen on people who sing songs in a completely different tune to the original.
