It's probanly not that drastic, but certainly gives us all another stick with which to beat our woefull government.

I'll be honest, I did not expect anyone to respond to the thread. But seeing as you took the time Sprout, I think that having listened to the non-political comments, it would seem that it is not going to make much of a difference.

 

I'm sure Labour will use it to beat the Con-Dem's around the head with it and score political points, but I'm tending to listen to the city and the economists.

 

Let's hope that people don't see it as a massively negative thing and our economy sinks in sympathy. I really don't want to see any more business hit the wall.

Me either EC, but I fear Labour will do just what you say.....it's all tit for tat. I really wish they'd get their knives out of each others backs and put their efforts into sorting the country out.

I think that in general I am politically neutral (If you can be such a thing). I do not trust any party. A friend of mine always says that politicians are different pigs eating from the same trough. I too wish they could all work together more to the betterment of the country.

So Labour should too. Osborne was very mouthy when other countries where loosing their AAA statuses.

Nope  whenever I get embroiled in threads on politics it usually ends up in a row. So I am going before this one does because I am not very expressive when it comes to saying what I think without causing myself problems 

Funnily enough, I have the same problem   I know what I want to say, I just can't put it into words properly 

 

It's strange but when I started the thread I actually thought I would get jokes or off topic comments. I don't usually get embroiled in political threads because as you say they can get heated. But I do read them because I can learn a lot by listening to a posters arguments. My impression is that some on here have a deep political knowledge.

Well, the government have certainly changed their tune.

 

Before it was guff like "Sound debt reduction has enabled us to retain the trust of the markets and retain our credit rating.  The AAA rating is vital to keep our borrowing costs down.  Don't let Ed Balls' irresponsible borrowing ruin it!"

It would be somewhat different if Labour had just lost the AAA rating.

One thing's for sure.  If Labour had won the election and just lost the AAA  rating the right wing press would be full of front page editorials calling it a national tragedy and calling for the chancellor's resignation and a vote of no confidence. 

 

The biggest concern of the right wing press is not for the UK economy but the assets and income of the rich. 

 

The right wing press would rather the debt be paid off by the plebs than the millionaires.  In fact, it's a convenient excuse to justify a low tax, small state, as they've promoted for years.

 

Austerity doesn't even have to work very well at all as long as the IMF's happy with the repayments.  The IMF will always be happy with right wing economic policies.

 

The Tories will use the IMF as a bogeyman but the government's austerity program is tougher than the IMF would demand.  The IMF are asking the government to spend more, not less.

 

 

 

The Tories talked down the economy with absolute glee when Brown was in charge.  Even now, they are still trying to blame the global recession on Gordon Brown.
