My sister used to nick my dads bike and we'd ride around on it - she'd be peddling as she had the longest legs, my brother would be on the seat and I'd be on the handle bars Big Grin barmy days Laugh

I once wrote in chalk that one of my neighbours was a Witch as I hated her nicking my balls. My mother nearly killed me when she found out. She made me get a bucket of water and brush and wash the sign then I had to do odd jobs for a week for the Witch as punishment Nod (rightly so but she's still a Witch) Laugh

French Elastic or French Skipping

We play this game with a really long piece of elastic, about 2cm wide and 3 metres in length. We tie the ends of the elastic together to make a loop.

that was written by someone posh! We had packets of thin coloured elastic bands that we painstakingly joined together! Must been dozens of them!

Yeah I do!!

Does anyone remember a strip of plastic like the cheerleaders use in their dances, and you used to stand in the playground trying to do all these complicated dances that never really came off and the plastic ripped in a couple of days.

We loved that and played it for hours.
A gang of us had a dress up night about 8 yrs ago. We had to dress in school uniform and we played it in the middle of a packed pub. Such a laugh a gang of 40 somethings trying to jump on two lines of elastic at the same time.
So many wanted to play along that we ran a tournament.

Laugh Yeah... whatever happened to that. I always imagined it had been pooped by a white poodle when I was little!!! Laugh

was mostly the calcium from bones dogs chewed that gave the white poop effect. dogs hardly eat bones these days.

plus poop NORMALLY gets picked up more now...though you wouldn;t think it by the state of the path to school or kids parks Mad

lots of true stuff there,...except, I never drank "cool aid" or rode in the back of a "pick up" I never had a "BB gun" OR tried out for "little league" probably cause I was raised in the UK in the 50s n 60s and NOT the USA,
so I suppose another thing that could be added to the list is that Britain wasnt "Americanised" back then either,
other than that, I agree with the points made in the post,
I am 56 and I am SO glad I was born when I was, I feel sorry for the kids of today, not so much the teenagers, but the younger kids, they miss out on so much that we used to take for granted,
staying out all day with ya pals building a "den" in the woods, and your folks not being worried at all, only going home when when ya belly told ya it was time, didnt get into trouble cause I was more scared of my dad than the police, yip WE was lucky, Nod

your post made me laugh OHG. You had the same sort of parents as me, and a similar type childhood by the sounds of it. I am round about the same age as you Wink (maybe slightly older). I had a magical childhood, a real childhood, an innocent childhood. We swam in dirty rivers, caught small fish with nets and put them in jamjars, roller skated down steep hills and had the scabby knees as evidence of some mishaps along the way. My holidays were one long 'adventure', getting shoved out in the morning by my mother and told to stay out until I was hungry. She didn't want to see my face for ages lol. There was no sex education in our primary school but I would have instinctively known that if anyone touched me inappropriately that it was wrong. I was afraid of my teachers, I was afraid of my father and mother, and I was very very afraid of the Parish Priest. I was referred to him once for being late for school, he was considered the last resort for misbehaviour. I was brought up in Ireland though, don't forget Laugh

The children today do not have a childhood, they have an existence. They know about everything sexual before they should, thereby taking away their innocence. What they don't know how to do is play, to have fun, to have adventures, to be a child, to be carefree. They do not have respect for anyone or anything, they fear nothing. My childhood was spent respecting people, fearing reprisals from adults .. and in that way I learnt how to behave and have some manners. But along the way I enjoyed an enchanted childhood, a magical childhood that no child today will ever enjoy. I feel blessed that I was born in an era when I was allowed to be a child for a very long time.
