Known for the television series Penny from Heaven and films as varied as The Long Good Friday, Mona Lisa, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

such a shame
Very sad R.I.P
I liked Bob as an actor and he seems to have been a lovely man. RIP Bob.
I remember Bob Hoskins as a big influence from a young age, and I was very sad when I heard a few years ago that he had Parkinson's disease.
My father was a huge fan of "Pennies from Heaven", but even before that I remember Hoskins from the seminal adult literacy show "On The Move". Some years later, I read an interview with him where he explained that he'd been committed to the show because he'd previously helped a work colleague learn to read.
*** Warning: if you haven't seen "The Long Good Friday" before, the following clip is a major spoiler. ***
One of the most memorable endings in British cinema. Hoskins gives an acting masterclass, and yes: that is a young Pierce Brosnan...
I recommend Last Orders; he was brilliantly understated in that.
Always liked Bob Hoskins since I first saw him in Pennies From Heaven, thought he gave a great performance in Mona Lisa and I adored him as Smee. But yeah, that final scene in The Long Good Friday is fantastic.
There's been some nice tributes on Twitter and I like this blog too:

Rest in peace Mr Hoskins, you'll be sorely missed
A fine actor â many of his performances over the years have given me great pleasure. The Long Good Friday and Mona Liza were particularly good crime thrillersâĶ from an era when the UK barely had a film industry.
RIP
A true British film legend has died today, a very sad day indeed.
So sad - RIP Bob, great actor, and a lovely man - these are words from his daughter
11 LESSONS FROM MY DAD
My darling Dad has died. I loved him to the ends of the earth and he loved me back just the same. These are the lessons he taught me, I will keep them close to my heart and remind myself of them whenever I stumble or falter. They are his words; the words spoken so often to encourage, comfort and reassure. This isnât general wisdom, rather advice that he tailor-made just for me. I love you Dad.
1) Laugh. Thereâs humour to be found everywhere, even your darkest days thereâs something to have a joke about. Laugh long and loud and make other people laugh. Itâs good for you.
2) Be yourself. If someone doesnât like you theyâre either stupid , blind, or theyâve got bad taste. Accept who you are, youâve got no one else to be. Donât try to change yourself, thereâs no point. Donât apologise. Donât make excuses. Be yourself and if anyone else doesnât like it they can f*ck off.
3) Be flamboyant, itâs who you are and always have been. Be eccentric and unique. Donât try to adapt yourself to someone elseâs view of normal. That belongs to them, not you. Like yourself as you are.
4) Donât worry about other peopleâs opinions. Everyoneâs a critic, but ultimately what they say only matters if you let it. Donât believe your own press. People can just as easily sing your praises as they can tear you down. Donât waste your time on things you canât change. Let it slide off you like water off a duckâs back.
5) Get angry, itâs ok to lose your temper now and then. If anger stays in, it turns to poison and makes you bitter and sad. Get angry, say your peace, then let it go.
6) What ever you do, always give it a good go. Donât be afraid of failure and disappointment. If you fall flat on your face then get straight back up. Youâll always regret not trying. Disappointment is temporary, regret is forever.
7) Be generous and kind because you canât take it with you. When youâve got something to give, give it without hesitation.
8) Appreciate beauty, take pictures and make memories. Capture it, you never know when itâll be gone.
9) Donât take yourself too seriously. People who take themselves too seriously are boring.
10) Never, ever, ever, ever give up. Keep on punching no matter what your up against. Youâre only defeated if you give up, so donât give up.
11) Love with all your heart. In the end, love is the only thing that matters.
