  I'm just interested as I like Veuve and Piper as they are in my price range (cheapish), I obviously can't afford the likes of Cristal or LP Rose....which do taste far better on the pallet, but are not in my league (yet)!!

In the more sane cash bracket Louis Roederer NV is a v. satisfying tipple.  Very classy wine.  Bolly is getting back on it's feet again.

@ £16 I'd buy Pelorus from New Zealand.  Pisses all over French fizz at twice the price.  Or Roederer's Californian effort.  That is a very good wine.

Desert island would be Krug 1990 or Dom Perignon 1996.

Fizz is of particular interest to me as I am quite fussy about it and Veuve to me has a nice crisp taste!  But is cheap, the bubbles are too big and it's popular now so many people get a bit stuffy about admitting they like it!

Ooh Prof, do you know about wine? Do you know anything about St Emilion? I want to buy a really good bottle for a birthday present for a friend but I don't drink red wine and know nowt about it.

TBH I quite like Jacobs Creek sparkling chardonnay, a different taste everytime. Especially when one can get it for  about £7, however the one I had on Sat night.... the cork more or less fell out-no fizz.

Billecart Salmon is quite a quaffable rose fizz. Though not cheap anymore.

Thanks Prof. I wondered if I would have to spend a lot to get a good one. I have picked up 3 bottles from various places, they cost about 15 quid and I'm not confident that they are any good.

How much do you think I have to spend. I could probably push it to 30 quid but not 150

Lacey, the LP Rose is just grossly over-priced.  Whatever one's taste.  What is it, 45 nicker a btl now?  If not more.

It just isn't a wine at that price point.

Aye, been quite annoying really.  Gone from a nose tapper, those in the know, to a junior premium bubbly in the past 5 years.  Hey ho, they deserve it.  They do good work.

Hi Prof, I was in Tescos and saw a bottle of St Emilion for 15 quid and then I saw one in Lidl half price for a tenner so I bought them both but then I worried that they would be pants. Like I said I did try surfing the web but there was so much info about these wines that I got really confused.
I would like to get my mate a good bottle but don't know what to choose - I could maybe go up to 40 quid if that was the only way.

The Bordeaux folk are being twats again with their prices but we can get you a good wine at your bracket.  When you got to buy?  Am at a wee Claret tasting in a couple of weeks - don't know if there's any St Emilion on the cards but there may be.
