well that is very true.

i'm maybe on shakey ground here so please bear with me if this seems to have a lot of info missing but i realy cant say more.

one of the children we look after has a mother who is an alcoholic, to the point that her children didnt have clothes to go out in and used to get fed in their underwear by neighbours (there were other issues too that i wont cover), i was horrified that because her children had been removed she was put onto disability living allowance meaning that she was able to buy even more cheap strong cider on the grounds that she had "mental issues".

Sadly she is right in one repect, she is not the only one. The drinking culture of this country is shameful.
Why oh why do a lot of people think it is great fun to get so plastered that they do not know what they are doing.
The government should impose huge fines and curfews on anybody out on the streets who is incapable of walking straight (through drinking), and double it for pubs/clubs who allow their patrons to get in that state.
If Joe public can not regulate their drinking themselves, then somebody will have to do it for them.

Not shakey ground at all.
They receive more money due to this and spend it on the very thing that adds to their problems

It`s a catch 22 situation.

I never thought that I`d go down the road of thinking about controlling how benefits are spent, (I`m a leftie) but in some circumstances, it may be necessary.

Its a frickin disgrace, when is this kind of crap ever gonna end. The government is on its knees money wise yet we continue to shove money down these leeches throats.

I heard my jobless wonder neighbours screaming at their kids last night because the lad had spent ÂĢ2 at the shop and now they couldn't buy fags. I was furious. Calling him a c u next tuesday and everything. They have got a massive plasma, they sit with their doors open, couches in the garden to sunbathe on. I am taking some satisfaction in the fact someone his own size cracked him last week.

The girl descirbed in this article and my scum neighbours are what is driving this country into the ground.

If this girl has woken up in a police station so many times, why the hell is she being put on a crufew, lock the tramp up, might encourage her to think about things rather than "go home and forget about it".

lol no, shaky ground because i'm mentioning part of the reason for a child being in care, i couldnt give a stuff about the fat bloated drunken cow other than as a taxpayer.

i'm sure she'd have less of an alcohol problem if she had her benefits stopped, at least until she was locked up (again) then her only problem would be not being able to drink at all.

It is. We moved their when we were young and wasn't really arsed, the rent is really cheap and we have no kids or anything yet but its straight out of Shameless. When the sun came out this year it was that point I realised I'd had enough of it and by summer of next year I want out. They are disgusting. She screams "I don't give a f**k" all day, at her kids, her OH, her mates.

When I am going to work in the morning I see a really nice family getting in their car each morning taking the kids to school we say hello, I chat to the kids, the nightmare familys blinds are closed, no sign of life, I wonder if those kids ever get to school. Last nights outburst really made me angry and upset for them.

have you considered an anon report to social services or nspcc?

sounds like emotional abuse at a very minimum and possibly neglect.

Oops sorry for misunderstanding "shakey ground"
I get you now.

Yes, it`s a dodgy situation but why should it be allowed to continue?

More permanant control is required in these circumstances. Sticking her in prison, although deserved, is a temporary solution.

It until last night I hadn't really seen the full extent of it but I was gobsmacked. I knew that the kids were up till late and the Mum and Dad argued a lot with each other but last night was something else. It was the sort of outburst you would see two drunken men giving each other outside a pub. The language was shocking. I seriously considered it last night. I am going to watch out for them much more now.

But that would make this a Nanny country now wouldnt it? When does personal responsibility come into play?

The government already interferes way to much on trivial things. How about it interfering in something useful.
As for personal responsiblity, it is obviously something that is lost on a lot of people.

a mother of a kid in sons primary school class, told me a similar story. a friend of hers was alcoholic, her three children were fostered/in care. she was/is allowed to stay in the three bedroomed house, as some day, subject to her 'getting better', she will be reunited with her children. in the meantime, she is permanently drunk and music blares day and night from her sparcely furnished abode.

I agree that the drinking culture in this Country is shameful, however, the minority spoil it for the majority (like me), I like a drink with Friends, but know how to control myself....

...the Governments answer?...to try and stop shops selling cheap beer, which, I think is unfair on us responsible drinkers.....

The Guy who runs an Offy near me got caught selling alcohol to underage drinkers....guess what happened to him....he was fined a few hundred ÂĢ and stopped from selling for a month!!!! What's the point, he should've been banned from selling alcohol for LIFE! Nod

Yep that's true.. alcoholism is a designated disease.

Alcoholics can be extremely manipulative and know how to work the system. The Mental Health Act can apply to some of them, and this can be quite lucrative. It also saves them the bother of going out to get a job.

I call it the hidden disease. Nobody wants to know about it or understand it. Meanwhile, many people can suffer because of one alcoholic's need. The alcoholic him/herself lives life in a blur.

I know of one who begged Social Services to let him/her see a psychiatrist. The Social Services turned round and said s/he had to give up drinking first.

Social Services haven't got a clue.
