As you know, there are problems with either not being able to quote in replies at all, or having to open the reply box, then scroll back to the text you want to quote and highlight, then scroll back to the reply box and click on the quote icon, which can be a bit of a hassle. I thought I would ask on the Social Strata help forum pages what was being done and I have had a reply from Brian Lenz, one of their software engineers.

This is a copy of his reply:

I can't give any promises as far as a date of the next release, but I would anticipate it to be some time in the next month or two.

There won't be any highlighting of text in the new model.  Instead, you'll essentially be clicking a flag/checkbox of some sort next to each post to indicate that you want to quote it.  You will be able to select multiple messages, and then when you click reply, it will include all of the text from all of those messages.

We will likely also give some kind of "quick quote reply" next to each reply for the scenario where you just want to quote a single reply.

In any event, the feature has not yet been implemented, so this is just a high level overview of how we're anticipating things will work.  It is by no means a promise to implement the feature as described here since we may need to alter the design a bit during implementation as we discover issues, etc.

Hopefully that gives you a clear idea of where we're going with the feature.

I also asked him if there would in the meantime a quick fix for those using IE and other browsers who can't quote at all, before this next release. Unfortunately they won't be doing this. So I will repeat my own tip which I have previously posted.

My temporary quick fix is to highlight the text to quote, press Ctrl-C, go to the reply box, type something like "Quote from " user name, then press Ctrl-V. Obviously this appears as ordinary reply text, but it's better than nothing.

I've also posted this in Feedback.

Can people bump this thread if they see it drifting off the page as I don't want yet another sticky

I now discover that the opeing post is restricted in length so the last part of my post, below Brian is all squashed up.

It goes on:

Thanks for this information El Loro.
I wish them luck with it, as it will be nice for ever forum member to have use of all the resources.
I note Brian says the new model will show all the text from a quoted message.
I suppose if one only wants a single sentence, or even just a few words, it will be just a matter of deleting the parts not required.
I was beginning to wonder if there was any progress about the posting problem, so this is good to know.
Appreciated.

Isn't it for the mods to decide if a thread is stickied or not rather than us ordinary forum members?
I and others have sometimes asked a thread to be stickied, then the mods have said yes & put a sticky on, or they said no. I didn't want to ask this thread to be stickied as we've already got 8 up there.

I can't be bothered to read all that - is there a prÃĐcis version?
The short version is that there will be a big improvement in the next update in the next month or so, as you will be able to select quotes from different messages and they will appear in your reply box. We may be able to also do a quick reply to a message from a button by each message, but that's not certain.
But they are not doing a quick fix for IE and other users in the mean time. So I repeated my own tip in my second post for a way around that.

Once we get the update, things should be a lot better than at present, and better than before they made the changes.

but as Brisket says, it doesn't seem like there'll be an option to quote part of a post?
That's what it seems at present, but as Brisket says we can always delete the bits that we don't want. It would be quick to delete the excess as we would just highlight the text we wanted to get rid of, first before the text to keep, press Backspace to get rid of, and then repeat for the unwanted text after the text to keep.

I don't see why I should, given that IE is the most widely used browser and therefore whatever I'm looking at it should work with.
I totally agree with you

I use Firefox as I got fed up with IE not working properly here. If I use Firefox, after I highlight text to quote, when I click the Post Reply button I can see that the highlighted text remains highlighted. If I use IE, the instant I open the Post Reply box, the text ceases to ne highlighted, so the quoting won't work.

Is it going to work no matter what browser we use ?
I hope so, but that's down to Seattle to make sure.

I think Growly was tryna say:-

" here we go...the birdman of GaGa FFS...ya just can't behave like an ordinary forummer can ya? Always "updating" us even if we don't bleedin' care!
We're just ordinary forummers - that includes YOU!
But noooo...whenever there's some kinda malfunction or a need for info, in ya come flapping ya bleedin' wings of many colours purely to peacock your knowledge!!!!!1111!!!
I wish you would stop doing that sh1t and leave it to the real Mods!!"

Apologies if I'm wrong, Growly.
